New Charleston Non-profit joins Social Movement for Disability Equality

(Charleston, SC - October 7, 2019) Be the Change Charleston is a new Charleston-based non-profit, focused on empowering exceptional communities through advocacy, education, and support. The organization, which is founded by former special educators and behavior technicians, Halie Tumbleston and Shaina Bermudez, currently offers a free current Local Event Calendar that consolidates inclusive events for individuals with exceptionalities in the greater Charleston area. They also provide a comprehensive Resource and Agency Directory that includes national, state, and county-based organizations serving individuals with exceptionalities all in one convenient location.

After working in a public high school setting, both teachers found themselves searching for more resources and services to help their students. After students with exceptional needs graduate high school at the age of 21, the number of quality support services decreases significantly. In response, the former special educators and behavior technicians took action and formed Be the Change Charleston. Their goal in creating the local non-profit is to connect individuals with exceptional needs and their families to existing local non-profits and community resources, develop quality programs, and create a more inclusive community through educational efforts and events.

“We both just feel this calling to be apart of something bigger than ourselves," explains Halie. "We want to inspire our community to embody BEing THE CHANGE, by joining us in the social movement aimed at seeking a more equal opportunity and accepting world, for individuals with exceptionalities.”

Stay tuned for BIG and exciting news coming soon! To access the local event calendar and other resources, like the Resource and Agency Directory, and for future plans for growth and community involvement for exceptional individuals in the Lowcountry visit www.bethechangecharleston.org
